Loved this place! The food was excellent. The staff was very nice and started dinner early just for us. Loved my curry even though I couldn't pronouce it. I will never eat anywhere in La Crosse again... take that Old Country Buffet!

For the sleepy city of La Crosse and the surrounding area chock full of chain restaurants, the Taste of India does a decent job of offering the area some spice. If you are looking for authentic Indian cuisine you may need to keep looking, however the Taste of India is a decent enough substitute to satisfy your needs. The restaurant is clean, the staff is friendly and the food tastes great.

We went for lunch buffet here stopping in LA Crosse for a road trip break. Looks like current owner got the place about a year ago. He and the other staff were very pleasant to talk to and were very prompt in checking with us how we were doing. We tried chicken, vegetarian items and sweets. Everything we tried was fantastic. I am so glad we ate here and would definitely recommend to check out this place.

Probably my favorite restaurant in La Crosse. Great food- vegetable korma, navratan korma, malai kofta are our favorites. Enjoy.

While the happy dance upon finding out that there actually is an Indian restaurant in LAX was a little embarrassing, it was absolutely justified. The address on their website is/was wrong, but we stumbled upon it and it was worth looking for. The correct address is 1812, not 1218. Ordered Kadai Chicken and Goat Biryani. Both were delicious, although the goat was not trimmed out as well as might be expected and had many pieces of bone in it. Not a problem, but a quite a surprise. Great service, especially when they found out that the friend I was with had never had Indian. Will definitely be back!

Amazing lunch buffet!! Such a variety ad fresh, tasty food. They don't however have tap beer, despite having the $3.99 check in offer.

Awesome food!!! Don't expect super fast service, but they are always friendly and helpful. There are many tasty dishes to choose from, but I recommend Malai Kofta, Vegetable or Navaratan Korma, and the Garlic Naan. You won't be disappointed!

$10.99 for the (weekend) lunch buffet seemed a bit steep, but I went -- and enjoyed it. I'm surprised the owners chose this location. A place up near Main Street (closer to UWLaX and downtown) would have made more sense. New Taste of India doesn't have the giant buffet that you'll find at Indian restaurants in major metropolitan cities. But they had a lot of my favorites... garlic naan bread, tandoori chicken, butter chicken, gulab jamun, etc. Mmmm! Unlike most indian restaurants, New Taste's bathroom was clean to western standards. Yay!

When New Taste First opened I was SUPER excited. The food was better than I expected especially being in La Crosse. However, since the manager Tony left, things have been slipping. A few minor changes have happened to which I think greatly affect the quality of the food and experience. The madras chicken recipe seemed to have changed, they used entirely too much coconut milk, hardly any tomatoes and the coriander was over powering. It looked like a spicy version of chicken korma, as if they had just used extra korma and threw in a few spices. We asked for it to be medium, it was not. They also changed their take out containers. Now every time we pick up take out, food it spills, no matter how we carry it. The portion of the take out is also smaller compared to previously. They often seem confused when we go to pick up orders and never seem to know what's going on. If we wait the time they state to go pick up, we end up waiting an additional 15 minutes for them to have the food ready. When you dine in their service is average. They buffet isn't bad, just make sure you go when it's busy so it's fresh. To be honest, we probably won't be dining there anymore.

I had the lunch buffet. There is nothing special or outstanding about the food. On the low end of Indian food. The chicken korma was the best. Everything was barely warm. Lack of another Indian restaurant nearby must be driving these good reviews.

La Crosse has a gem here. Whatever you order, you can't go wrong. Very tasty, authentic cuisine. Word of advice, this is not fast food - that is, don't be in a hurry. Enjoy the moment at this quaint "hole in the wall". Service is very attentive, friendly, and unrushed.

Was a little worried since this is the only Indian restaurant we could find in La Crosse, so not sure if excellent reviews would have been the same if there was competition. Turns out this was right on par with my favorite Indian restaurant at home. Perfectly spiced Palek Paneer and wonderful chai. Kheer was really sweet, but it is dessert...

  • Foodie F.

The service was poor. The server did not have any interest in helping. They were unable to split the bill in 2. Food and add ons were way over priced.

  • Sylvie F.

I think the service has drastically improved; also the crowds have thinned out at the weekend buffet. They have painted great murals in the walls; I love the tiger in the back. The choices on the buffet today included an okra dish, vegetable korma, eggplant and chili pakora, plus a kofta dish. Vegetarian heaven! Stop back to this place and check it out!!

As a South African who loves/knows good curry, I can HIGHLY recommend this place!! The owner is amazing and so friendly. The restaurant has amazing food with a huge menu and a wonderful ambiance. The staff is knowledgeable on the menu and have great recommendations regarding what to try. Haven't tried the buffet yet, but the food we have tried is AMAZING! I can't say enough nice things about this restaurant. Do yourself a favor and go there!

  • Surly M.

Since this is La Crosse's first and only Indian restaurant, I had low expectations. We came first for the buffet and was immediately impressed. I am no expert about Indian food, but this was better than what I've had!

I can't tell you how happy I am for an Indian Restaurant in La Crosse. This location is owned by the same people that own "Taste of India" in Rochester, MN. My husband and I are regulars. We love Indian food and put up with the growing pains - sometimes slow service, too small building, months to get the tap beer running, overwhelmed manager, etc. There are many vegetarian options. If you order off the menu you can get spicy food, the buffet is usually tamed down for the masses.

My husband and I took our 1 year old daughter here for the lunch buffet. We are all vegetarians who are moving to La Crosse this summer. We were thrilled with our experience at New Taste of India. As some of the other reviewers have mentioned, the lunch buffet is not as "hot" (spicy) as the regular menu, but this seems typical of other Indian restaurants' buffet service. Having said that, we thought the food was well-spiced for a buffet, which is meant for a wide range of palates. The prices were reasonable, the food was flavorful, and they had a great selection of vegetarian (as well as meat) options. The regular menu has a ton of options, and I thought that the buffet did a nice job providing a good sampling of their offerings. This is a great place to go to get Indian food. Although we are from Iowa, we have had Indian food in a variety of larger cities across the country and in a couple of European countries, and this food measures up. We are looking forward to eating here on a regular basis when we move to La Crosse. This is a great place to get your Indian food fix.

The staff is very nice and helpful with the menu every time I've come in. The food is super good too.

I love Indian food and am glad people continue to support this restaurant as I would be sad to see our only Indian restaurant go. I enjoy the lunch buffet so I can try new things. If you are looking for spicier versions, come back for the evening dinners where you can request your heat. Only reason I didn't give it a 5 star is that I found not all the buffet food was hot but rather warm. Friendly staff and very accommodating to children.

  • Jennifer N.

Surprisingly good and unexpected for la crosse. Prices are a little steep, but the lunch buffet is very reasonable and definitely the way to go. I would have to say that Royal Thai in Onalaska has better flavor and seems fresher. The service is better here though.

Excellent service. Manju is the manager and is incredibly welcoming and friendly. I am happy that LaCrosse has this restaurant and I recommend it for a pleasant dining experience. Good spice in the food as well!

I highly recommend this restaurant. The food was incredible! Best vegetable pakoras I've ever had. Wonderful service! I was placing an order and a dish was recommended to me (being a vegan/gluten free) and it was delicious!!!!

This is a really, really good Indian restaurant. I'm from Boston, where I'm lucky enough to have access to some really, really good Indian restaurants, and I was first introduced to really, really good Indian food in NYC when I was a kid, and I can say quite happily that the chicken tikka marsala here is unmatched. I was eating the tomato sauce with a spoon. My fiancé ordered shrimp vindaloo and it was delicious. I don't even normally eat shrimp, but I ate all his shrimp. We also had the poori and the raita and mixed pickle, the nan and daal, and the chaat, and it was all top-notch. The restaurant is charmingly decorated, not noisy even when almost full (as it was when we visited), and very clean, and overall it was a delightful dining experience. I'm so happy New Taste of India exists, since I have a family home just across the Mississippi in MN and as much as I love steaks and garden vegetables, a girl has to have her Indian food fix once in a while, like a lot! Thanks, New Taste!

So I love the food and though I have visited many, many times...I have not been back in over a year. Ever time I consider going I remember how mean the, what I assume is the manager or head server, is. He was rude ever time I went borderlining on being just a solid jerk. I am thinking of going to see if he is gone and I can enjoy a meal without being treated poorly. The food is amazing. I recommend the lamb saag.

Great buffet for lunch. My first experience of Indian food and I loved it! I will order off menu next time

  • Elliott R.

Food was okay. Not excellent but not bad. Quick and attentive staff seated me promptly for the lunch buffet ($9.99). Definitely got me full. The buttery naan wasn't as good as the garlic naan. This place is like any other standard Indian restaurant with a lunch buffet. Location: It's in the corner spot of a local plaza. Doesn't pop out from Jackson St. but once you pull into the parking lot you'll see it.

This was a first trip for me. I had the madras curried goat and it was fantastic!!! Would definitely recommend. The only reason I didn't give 5 was that it took us quite awhile to get our food but the wait was definitely worth it 4 1/2 is closer to my experience. I will definitely be returning.

  • Michael G.

Veer and Kumar did a great job answering our questions and explaining how a few different dishes were prepared. My GF and I tried the tomato soup, buttered nan, a korma, a curry, and the chef happily prepared an off-menu Indian spinich dish called palak pakora. The condiments struck the correct balance of sweet, hot, salty, and acid. For dessert, they were out of the mango ice cream so we tried the pistachio ice cream and mango cake. Yum! Everything was delicious! If we lived in LaX, instead of St Paul, we'd eat here weekly!

  • Jason W.

My experience did not live up to the reviews. Perhaps Sunday at noon is not the time to come, because it was just me and one other table. The buffet was not hot. It was warm, and fairly cold when I got to my table. The staff was depressing, which never keeps the experience. I'm not from the area and wouldn't come back.

Let me tell you, I love me some spicy Indian food and this quaint little eatery does not disappoint. As we all know, La Crosse doesn't boast the widest array of grub like larger cities have to offer, so this restaurant was quite the pleasant surprise. On New Years Eve, my friend and I trekked over with hungry stomachs and were prepared to gorge our little hearts out on everything decadent and spicy. The dimly lit room was perfect for an evening out and the aroma of curry when first bursting into the restaurant was divine. Our waiter was extremely helpful, light hearted, and joked with us about how spicy we could handle our dishes (and yes, we were prepared for the challenge!). If you're into chicken, go for the Chicken Tikka Masala. It was absolutely heavenly and let me tell you, I ate the entire thing. It consists of succulent boneless chicken in a rich and spicy tomato sauce. Order yourself a side of Garlic Naan and soak in the creamy sauce even more. My friend opted for the Chicken Goa Curry which had a bit of coconut milk, ginger, and garlic and was just as good. We both left feeling stuffed and completely satisfied. Do yourself a favor and try this eatery at least once because I can guarantee you'll be heading back for more!

5 stars for their dinner menu, 3 for their lunch buffet

Great food each & every time. Doesn't matter weekday lunch buffet, dinner buffet or dinner. Service is sometimes a little slow at dinner time but is not always the case. If you are looking for a nice laid back relaxing spiced dinner, great food & not in a hurry this is the place to go. They have Naan like Naan other! A must try! The Mango Shrimp Korma is one of our favorites & the honey cheese balls are a lunch favorite as well.

Authentic, delicious Indian food.....fantastic service with great recommendations on entrees. I prefer hot & had the Chicken Nilgiri Koma (chicken cooked in garlic ginger & tomatoes in coconut milk. ....YUMMM!) My friend had the Lamb Boti Kebab served with dal & naan....ordered medium, but ended up with a hot sauce on the side to warm things up. I can't express enough how the flavors dance....an incredible pleasure. Impeccable, friendly service. A definite stop next time I come through LaCrosse!

Service with only 7 tables was a bit slow, staff was friendly however food is good but not great. Drunken noodles had a penicillin type of aftertaste.

Update: Got the eat-in buffet with the family a few weekends ago. Nothing was quite as flavorful as when we ordered take-out off the menu, nor was it as spicy. Don't know whether that is a buffet vs. menu issue, or if the quality has slipped a bit already. Still, though, it was good, with lots of variety. Pretty great tandoori chicken and chicken tikka masala. Not nearly as many nice veggies, though, which I was struck by on our earlier visit. I'd echo Indi G's review, although I can't speak to the service, since I got take out (including veg korma, chana masala, aloo gobi, lamb vindaloo, and goat curry). All were *really* good, especially the goat curry and veg korma. The goat was tender and succulent and full of little bones and connective tissue, just like it's supposed to be (probably riblets). Yum! They subbed out the rice (I had made some at home) for a big side of naan, which I hadn't even asked for, which was really nice of them. Can't wait to go back and eat there, where I can enjoy more of the condiments and sauces. Ditto the South Indian dishes like dosas, that I haven't had since living in the Bay Area, with a large S. Indian population. I suppose the last thing that must be noted is that La Crosse is obviously ready for this kind of food (long waits on Tuesday night?!) -- who will be the daring entrepreneur to open an authentic Thai, Korean, VIetnamese, or Ethiopian place? Come on people!

Hmmmm.... Been waiting for a long time for this to happen - Indian food in the Lacrosse area Great expectations with rather weak results. Some of the worst service. Food is adequate to good. But the service was such a buzz kill. Would have to recommend for the food. But be prepared to be underwhelmed by the service and to be basically ignored and to wait a long time for your food. Had chicken tika masala - $13.00 and 6 pieces of chicken. A yellow dal that was quite bad. Palak paneer that was a nice proportion - would give that two thumbs up. Spicy? Not so much - their medium is pretty mild. If you like some heat I would recommend ordering your entrees "hot". It is Lacrosse - so expectations should be for an Indian restaurant in Lacrosse...

This was OK Indian I thought. Very good service though. We had a appetizer plate of tandoori mixed grill things with lamb, shrimp, chicken and veggies which was OK. Then we had a chicken korma and some other kind of chicken with a spicy tomato sauce with dried fruits which was OK I guess. The nann bread was very good. They were out of the first two bottles of wine we asked for so settled with a glass. Overall everything was average. Not sure I'd make a point to go here again.

When I heard that there was an Indian restaurant in La Crosse, I was skeptical. But why not, it's lunch, right? Wow, we were pleasantly surprised. As other reviewers state, the Buffet selection at lunch is sufficient in variety, but terrific in quality. Our party of 5 arrived a little after noon on a Saturday and the restaurant had no problem seating us. Service was attentive, drinks refilled before empty. Flavor was quite good, even for large city Indian options. Bottom line, I will be back. I recommend "New Taste of India".

We are from out of state (from Alaska) and very well-travelled restaurant goers & consider ourselves "foodies." We went with my sister & her partner who are vegetarians, and who were very surprised to see that a well-reviewed Indian restaurant had opened in La Crosse. However, they warned us that they did not have high expectations. We were all pleasantly surprised. Food was tasty, service was great and the ambiance very pleasant. The papadam & Aloo Tikki appetizers with accompanying chutneys were very good. My husband & I ordered lamb curry which was delicious, and goat saag, which was interesting & flavorful. My sister & her partner had the dal fry & the vegetable korma, both of which they thought were excellent. All in all, a very pleasant dining experience.

I have been to this restaurant several times and have used their carry-out services. I am no expert on Indian foods, but I do know taste and everything that I have had from this restaurant has been fantastic. I am giving it five stars because, when compared to its peers in La Crosse, it is among the best. I have read the criticisms of service and I can only conclude that, as the experience of the staff has improved, the service has improved as well. Important to me is that the staff recognizes and remembers me when I go in. The best testimony to this restaurant is that when I recently went in at 5:30 pm on a Saturday evening for carry-out the place was packed. Try it. You'll like it.

  • Brandon D.

Fantastic food, but as of my last visit they just haven't gotten their service together. It took them hours to bring out our food both times I've visited. Further, the waiter-who appeared to stand out as the head of the wait staff or something similar-didn't remember who ordered what and couldn't tell the dishes apart. It took a few minutes of him spooning through our dishes to discover their content and deliver them to the right people. It's a shame to have such poor service with such great food and I'll look forward to changing my food if things get better one they've had a little more experience.

Pretty good Indian food. Huge portions, we ordered three entrees and got six meals out of it. Also love the delivery option, perfect for a snowy day when you don't want leave the house. Could be packed a little better, had sauce leaked down through the bag, but it didn't run into other containers, just a little messy. Will order again.

The food is the only reason this place gets four stars. We switched to take out because of the bad service. And even then the servers are rude and ignore you. They let our takeout sit and get cold before checking us out at the register. I hope they listen to these reviews and fix that problem soon. The food is too good to let this place fail due to bad service.

The food is pretty good, maybe not fantastic, but definitely worth going for. As other have said the service isn't great. I will go back, but keep hoping that it gets better.

Went to the weekend buffet on Sunday. Everything was awesome!!! Okra, chick pea, goat, and chicken dishes were the best Indian we have ever eaten. We are spoiled by Maharaja in Madison (voted best Indian restaurant year after year) and this beats even them for how delicious the food is at New Taste of India in their buffet. $10.99 is a very reasonable price for what is offered and how good everything tastes. Definitely recommend!!!!

This is a welcome, welcome addition to La Crosse's restaurant scene. Having had lots of Indian food in the lots of places, including India, we thoroughly enjoyed the food. The flavors were great. We ordered -- vegetarian samosas, Chicken Pakoras, Aloo Muttar, Lamb Korma, and Vegetablef Jalfrazi. All were really great except for the Chicken Pakora appetizer which needed to be slightly more marinated to deepen the flavor. We also loved the condiments. The Tamarind Sauce was especially fresh and wonderful. I was also amused that the condiments included ketsup (must be homage to the local environs). The mango lassi too was one of the best I've ever had. The decor needs work. Lots of potential there. We were told that the restaurant opened earlier than planned because people were clamoring for it to do so. The staff were friendly but seemed understandably rushed, given how packed the place was. With time and some minor tweaking, I'm sure all the pieces will fall into place. For now, the most critical ingredient works -- the food is fantastic!
